New Sun Peaks outdoor rink officially opens

sunpeaks-rink-trio-03feb2017 SUN PEAKS — An appreciative crowd stood in fresh falling snow as the new Sun Peaks outdoor skating rink was officially opened today (Friday, Feb. 3, 2017).

The rink, three years in the making, was built with contributions from the resort municipality, provincial and federal governments, Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust, and TNRD Electoral Area P. Area P contributed $50,000 from its federal gas tax allotment.

sunpeaks-rink-sign-03feb2017Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine noted the snowfall that had started in late morning was appropriate for an outdoor rink. Although it’s outdoors, the NHL-sized rink has a refrigeration system to extend the season.

Raine, Health Minister and Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake faced off for the official first puck drop performed by yours truly, Mel Rothenburger, who nailed it. Raine won the first face-off against Lake, and a second.

They and Darcy Alexander of Sun Peaks Resort LLP spoke at the opening. The Valleyview Skating Club performed some figure skating for the crowd.

The rink is designed for possible construction of a covering arena at some point. For more information on public skating hours, click here.
