The rink, three years in the making, was built with contributions from the resort municipality, provincial and federal governments, Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust, and TNRD Electoral Area P. Area P contributed $50,000 from its federal gas tax allotment.
Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine noted the snowfall that had started in late morning was appropriate for an outdoor rink. Although it’s outdoors, the NHL-sized rink has a refrigeration system to extend the season.
Raine, Health Minister and Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake faced off for the official first puck drop performed by yours truly, Mel Rothenburger, who nailed it. Raine won the first face-off against Lake, and a second.
They and Darcy Alexander of Sun Peaks Resort LLP spoke at the opening. The Valleyview Skating Club performed some figure skating for the crowd.
