‘Do not use’ order on Vavenby water expected for at least a week

TNRD-front officeVAVENBY – A ‘Do Not Use’ order put on the Vavenby water system by Interior Health is expected to be in force for at least the next week.

Residents got the news Wednesday night (Jan. 18, 2017) at a public meeting called by the TNRD to give them an update. A tanker truck spilled 800 litres of diesel fuel into the North Thompson River in an accident south of Avola early in the week.

Representatives from the Ministry of Environment, TNRD and IHA attended the meeting, as well as a consulting engineer.

Residents who get their water supply from the river are being told to use bottled water until further notice. The TNRD is supplying bottled water at the Vavenby Fire Hall between 12 noon and 7 p.m. Residents may receive eight litres of water per person in each household, per day.

Test results from water samples taken from the river are expected in the next couple of days.

In accordance with the IHA order, the TNRD must continue to take regular water samples and develop a remediation plan for the water system.
