McLURE — Residents of this community are approaching the first week of a new kind of sound — silence. Well, comparatively speaking.
Last Saturday, the whistles came off the level crossing at McLure Ferry Road, 10 years after residents first petitioned the TNRD to have them removed. After much study and a long bureaucratic process, all stakeholders finally signed off on removal of the whistles that have been keeping residents awake at night since they can remember.
In talking to quite a few of those residents this past week while making some rounds of doorsteps, I found they’re very pleased to see the long quest realized. Today (Sept. 1, 2016) I met Doug Herbert of CBC Radio, who’s putting together a story on the milestone for Daybreak Kamloops, at the crossing.
Almost on cue, a train came rumbling down the tracks, the bells rang, the gates came down — but no whistle.
Doug expects his story to air tomorrow morning, Sept. 2.
