The TNRD will ask federal environment minister Catherine McKenna to reconsider her rejection of a full federal panel review on the proposed open-pit Ajax copper mine.
I made a motion today (Thursday, March 10, 2016) to make the request after a delegation from the Kamloops Area Preservation Association — an opponent of the project — made a presentation to the regional district board.
The delegation said the mine would leave a huge imprint on the area south of Kamloops and expressed concerns about its environmental and social impacts.
Lytton Mayor Jessoa Lightfoot seconded my motion.
The only City director to speak to the motion was Mayor Peter Milobar, who said the City had already tried for a panel review and the chances of getting one are probably slight.
Nevertheless, the motion passed handily. As I stated in support of my motion, whether or not you support Ajax, a full panel review — regarded as more rigorous than the federal-provincial process that’s underway — makes sense.
The TNRD previously also supported a panel review, and re-stating that support and asking the minister to reconsider her stance at least adds some weight to the panel review option.
