CHASE — It was regional district night at the Art Holding Memorial Arena on Saturday (Feb. 13, 2016) as contributions from the TNRD and Columbia-Shuswap Regional District for upgrades to the building were officially recognized.
Mayor Rick Berrigan invited Electoral Area L Director Ken Gillis, me and Director Larry Morgan of CSRD Area F to drop the puck to open a game between the hometown Chase Heat and the Kamloops Storm.
All three Electoral Areas touch on the boundaries of Chase.
Director Gillis committed $30,000 from his area’s federal gas tax funds, $15,000 came from Area P’s gas tax money, and another $5,500 from Director Morgan’s area for improvements to the arena that included such things as better lighting, sound system, water pumps, penalty box and scoreboard.
Funding also came from the Village of Chase.
TNRD Chair John Ranta, TNRD directors Willow McDonald and Bill Kershaw, most of Chase council, and several staff members from both regional districts also attended the game and cheered on the Heat as they dominated the Storm in an impressive 5-0 win.
Gas tax money is provided by the federal government to local governments for support of community projects, including recreational infrastructure.
